A game of cooperation
Flowball is a network game for multiple players, in which the ability to cooperate is the key to success. Cooperation among players who form a team is as important as cooperation among different teams.
Still today, the win-loose paradigm is inherent in the educational system and hinders cooperation of individuals and teams even within organizations. People imply that winning is only possible based on another's loss. Bonuses are rewarded to the 'seller of the year', based on the expectation that all employees will do better when competing with each other, while reality shows just the opposite effect, there is no motivation to do better if 'we already now who's going to get this year's bonus anyway'.
A game of cooperation is a game where there is plenty of room for everyone to benefit. Most importantly, actively cooperating is rewarded and measureable.
We live in a complex and dynamic environment. Not only do we suffer from over-information, constant change requires active people who are able to rapidly evolve their abilities in order to adapt to challenging surroundings. This is true in everyday live and has an even deeper impact on individuals in modern enterprises and organizations.
To really get the big picture is the foundation for efficient cooperation among individuals and teams. The conceptual design of Flowball makes sure that the participants can easily understand the important aspects of the system, which enables them to cooperate and gain deep insights on the benefits of cooperation.
During a match, data is collected for use with the Flowball Analysis Module. This enables to analyse the degree of cooperation among participants and even to categorize players depending on their behaviour.
Teach cooperative strategies, win-win thinking and create amusing group experiences. Flowball is a simple game, it is easy to understand and makes it especially suitable for children in kindergarten and primary school.
Test potential employees for their ability to cooperate. Flowball is easily integrated in assessment centers. Besides being a fun game to play in groups, it is a rich tool that provides tangible results.

In a match of Flowball, two teams try to sustain the flow of balls among players thereby increasing the total score (there is no separate score for each team, both teams share a common score). Balls roll across the field from edge to edge and the players keep the balls in the game by receiving and passing them on to other players.
Each time a player receives a ball correctly (i.e. frontally), the common score is increased by the current value of the ball.
Balls that hit a player laterally or at the player's back do not score and either dissapear in a clowd or rebounce (depending on game options). If a player gets hit by a ball, the player's energy level decreases. When a player's energy level is too low, the player cannot move to another position until the energy level is restored to a minimum (but is still able to interact).
Players are encouraged to form chains to boost the score of balls, building chains of players is a straight-forward means of cooperation and increases the match's score more than individual players would by acting on their own. Balls that pass through a chain of players increase their value at each player, so that the total score is increased even more when players cooperate forming chains.
Players can non-offensively boing others to draw their or the participants' attention to their behaviour. Apart from being visually attractive and producing a good amount of amusement, the game enables players to communicate and interact, thereby creating an important mechanism for coordination.
Many game parameters may be adjusted to study the reactions of participants or adjust to a special kind of participants.
